Why is My Dishwasher Going Black Inside?. Why is my dishwasher going black inside?
Those moldy leftovers in the fridge that started to sprout legs are now colonizing the dishwasher.
We do pre-rinse dishes before we put them in the dishwasher.
That does not mean mold is not growing in it.
The only thing scarier than breathing black mold growing in damp walls is the specter of eating it off our supposedly clean plates.
Remember that there is mold floating around in the air all the time; it just needs a moist environment away from sunlight to grow, ideally alkaline and warm.
That’s my dishwasher if I use warm water.
Remember that the motor generates some heat, too, and your house on the whole is way warmer than outside.
How do I kill it?
Running the dishwasher with baking soda, vinegar and bleach – though not all at the same time – can help kill mold and mildew. You’ll want to clean the seals, too.
I’ve had to clean dishwasher soap off of it in the past.
You need to clean the seals with bleach to kill mold in the folds of the plastic. If there’s a hole leaking water into the door, then you may want to replace it.
If there’s enough water leaking into the dishwasher to support a major mold colony, it is going to be too rusted to keep anyway.
You can scrub the dishwasher crevices and seals with an old toothbrush to try to remove all the mold.
Is it only mold?
If you have not been cleaning the dishwasher drain cover, that black stuff could be because the chunk of rotted food on top of the drain finally came loose and spewed back up over the dishes.
I never thought I’d say this, but I prefer the black mold.
It could be because the dishwasher food grinder was stuck in place and finally came free as the rotted gunk holding it in place broke loose. Or you finally turned it on.
If I have a food grinder, it should automatically come on. What is the purpose of a food grinder?
To break up the large pieces of food that would otherwise clog the drain, causing the dishwasher to back up.
I have had it back up recently.
If the dishwasher has black stuff in it, then you did not clear the drain hose good enough, so the black rotted remains are now circulating up from the drain to the food.
That’s the opposite of clean.
You’ll need to clean the dishwasher drain cover and hoses again, then run it with bleach, vinegar and baking soda a couple more times to sterilize it.
I’d rather have dishes that smell like pickles than rotted food.
It’s better than people blaming the bad taste of today’s dinner on the remains of last week’s.
